[History] [The vines ] [The team ]

As of antiquity, the valley of Esclans was very famous for its grapes which furnished the rich Roman tables. The DOMAINE DU JAS D'ESCLANS is mentioned in the records as soon as the XIII century. It is also reproduced on the Cassini’s map in 1740.

The activities of the DOMAINE evolved throughout the centuries. First sheep fields of summer pastures from which its name of JAS; then significant sericulture whose alleys of mulberry trees being used to feeds the silkworms still remain the witnesses; and the viticulture which remains the only activity continuing nowadays.

The vines are grown in the 50 Ha (125 acres) vineyards wich has an ideal exposure towards east/ southeast, and is planted with the best grapes varieties of the Provence : Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault and Tibourenc for the Rosé and the Red wines, and Ugni Blanc, Clairette and Rolle fort he White wines.

The effort to improve the quality of the vines, such as replacing vines with ones that are better suited to the quality of the soil, investing in new equipement and techniques for winemaking, have resulted in being rewarded with the qualification "CRU CLASSE" in 1955, by the I.N.A.O. (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine) and the Ministry of Agriculture.

The vines recommanded by the "Syndicat de l’Appellation des Côtes de Provence" are carefully maintained following traditional methods, with regular plowing, without using weedkillers nor insecticides nor synthetic chemical products, and the grapes are manually harvested.
This method of work, unchanged since centuries, has enabled us to get the recognition of profesional organisations of Organic Agriculture. First in 1990 by NATURE ET PROGRES and after since 1992 by ECOCERT (SAS FR. 32600) . This certification is yearly controlled by extensed visits on the property.
